I need some help dating this ring.

No makers mark Chester office I think, year letter P. 18k

There is also a crown stamped on the reverse next to the centre stone.

I can't find a reliable site for gold like the 925 Silver reference.

Terrible photos, artificial light, USB scope.

The year letter (not a jewelry guy...is the letter on the right the year?) may be a "B" davey.

Looks like there is a lower 'counter' (the area of a letter that is enclosed by the letter):

    You could be right.

    If its a B then 1885
    If its a P then 1898

I'm just wondering if this has been repurposed and re-hallmarked.
There are some very faint marks not visible to a camera further along the shank.

1885 would be my guess. I was looking at Sheffield marks and one came up for 1845, which is more in keeping with the style of the ring.

The ring was in the box when found, it has H. Lamb Jewellers, West Hartlepool.
As far as I'm aware H.Lamb is one of the oldest businesses in the town.

Often called Gypsy set rings. It may have been resized which may explain marks on the band. Nice find!

Gorgeous ring, Davey. I agree, 1885, which is more in keeping with the style. The original box will add to the value. And Chester is rare, just like with silver.

Have you looked at those rubies with a UV torch (flashlight)? If they light up like these, they are likely to be Burmese, highly valued:

There is none that I know of. The silver sites are mainly set up for and by collectors of silverware, not jewellery. Jewellery collectors have to spend money on goldmark books like Tardy or Divis.:arghh:
But with UK marks you're in luck, hallmarks and date letters are the same for silver and gold.

I'm with Holly, these stones are not Gypsy set. With Gypsy setting the stones look like currants sinking into a batter mixture.:playful:

Best thing is to buy a pocket copy of Jacksons or Bradburys.
