Featured Large Jewelry Box

Hi all,
I picked up this rather large jewelry box today - weighs 11 lb 1 oz or 5k 20g, 9" x 6 1/2" x 7 1/2"H, add another 2" for the handle, still has the key and the lock works. You can see where the plate has worn off, doesn't attract a magnet so not lead.
I can find many the same although they are smaller than mine, all say 19th century French - what do you all think? I thought the lining had been replaced but it seems to be the same as the others - not velvet, but the 'fake' velvet material that is stiff like it has thin cardboard underneath it and collects lint and hair easily.

Lead is not magnetic.

 

They might be worth something if they were actually brass with repousse,but they appear to be cast base metal and probably not 19th century.

 

LOVE the size... I pass on a lot of boxes these days, but the size on this is nice

(im sure not, but) Is that a functioning button on the front towards the bottom?

 

What bothers me it the bright red velveteen with the gold trim.
It's the wrong red for old velvet.

I think it is newer as in 1960s. Who made and where from, I don't know.

cheapest cast régule, nothing repousse. and then "bronzed" with a cheap copper alloy.
agree with cluttered about age; certainly post-war when there was more than enough crap-metal around, e.g. millions of shells and cartridges, that often went into the smelters with the rest.

I'm with Holly and cluttered (and Joy ), fairly recent, and not top quality. It has an instant visual wow-factor though.
Not sure about French (style) either, the design looks too heavy to be French. Maybe 1960s, modelled after a Central European original?

 

I don't know how old it is, but it is lovely. And I think it will sell for a good price. It would look elegant sitting on a dresser.

 

!! $!! There were all over the yard sales in the 70's (from the 60's). Sizes ranged from in the palm of one's had to the size of one's hand -- and all seemed to be lined with that Tomato Soup red.

They DO look divine -- even the little fellows; but not QUITE that amount of money.

It does look quite elegant, I'm thinking it might be a fun for my granddaughter to keep her treasures in. She is only two though, maybe not age appropriate?

yes, the colour isn't the red you would expect and it has a 'cheap' look about it.

It weighs over 11 pounds for a 9 inch box? This is not in the same category as those thin mass produced jewelry boxes that weigh about 8 ounces. It may well be vintage, but that's a lot of weight.

I could not find another example on Ebay. I'd give it a shot on Ebay or a local sale before passing off to your granddaughter.

 

cx, is this oval thingie in the centre some kind of inlay? Bone, maybe? Or just a trick of the light? (Press button to a secret compartment? )

lol, I know, it is surprisingly heavy The shipping would be crazy high from Canada though, shipping to New York would be $49.00, shipping to the east coast of Canada would be around $30.00. I'll have a think about what to do with it
