Featured Bergere cane 3 piece suite identification ?

Hi all,

i purchased a wonderful 3 piece suite (x2 chairs and 1x two seater). With caned backs and claw and ball feet. I assumed they are from around the 1930s art deco style but the feet have thrown me as they are not usual for this period ? It also has a makers mark i can't make out or find anything on the web for, so if anyone has any knowledge on the maker and age that would be wonderful. Also i felt the wood was beech or ash any thoughts ?

An unusual set. I believe your thoughts are reasonable. I don't see any problem with the feet and an early (1930s-40s) mid 20th century date. I had a mahogany desk ca. 1945 with almost identical feet.

Thank you - good to know about the feet.

 

Not really deco. Claw and ball feet are typically Victorian, though think this circa 1940. Otherwise, styling vaguely French. Think you are right on regarding woods. If beech, it has a bit of stain to it.

 

Is there only one furniture stamp out of all 3 pieces? Busby, Dusby...

Wonder if it was made in this town. Maybe your internet location will bring up different results.

Style looks earlier than 1940s to me.
I would have gone to 1910-20s. I don't know as much as Brad, mine is just a guess.
Do you think the caning was original to the furniture? I can see this with leather seats and back.

Yes Brad that's what i thought about the bottom half really more victorian but the top is so simple. It make sense for it to be french.

Yes and it's only on the 2 back legs of the two seater sofa.

Ball and claw feet are actually chippendale style, though clearly this is a 20th century mixture of styles as has been discussed.

 

The caning would be original. Loose cushions would be used with it.

 

Of course you are right. Just mentioning Victorian due to the extensive use of such feet.

It could be earlier but something about the odd style choices, the squared arms/back, and that applied carving in the front says later to me.
