    So there is. Delicately carved, that bit is vulnerable. Nothing major, it wouldn't bother me.

    It seems like ivory from the shiny refraction, the pale color (bone is more to the buttermilk shades), the glazed surfaces and the fine work. Plus: bone is very brittle, and would fit less as a knob to a walking cane.
    If you are not sure, do as I do and tap it against your teeth; bone will give you a lower pitched 'thud', and you will feel "gain", like you could bite it. Ivory will give you a higher pitch 'klink', and will feel hard like your own teeth (since it's tooth).
    Hope this helped.

    Ha! Another person who isn't afraid to put an old piece to his/her mouth!
    As you probably haven't already read my hints for identifying many materials... my motto is: "to test it... taste it!" :):joyful:
    You are right, all senses have to be used for identification, sight, touch, hearing, smell and taste:p

    Hi,
    I agree with taste to tell old (pre 1986) to new Fiesta. The older NEW Fiesta looks like the old Fiesta but the tongue will tell you in a nano second.

    Ivory wouldn't be cold to the touch.
    Looks more like stone to me. I'm not sure the details would have worn down with ivory, like they would with stone.
    Soapstone?

    @daveydempsey
    What did you decide it was?

    Just to add one more voice to what is really a settled matter, totally looks like ivory to me. Even the fine cracks it has developed are characteristic;

    They would if stick was used enough. Tusks are like teeth. If you have bruxism, you'll know teeth can be worn down. :)

    Now I have to google what buttermilk looks like (lactose intolerant).;)
    I know more about ivory and bone than about buttermilk, and to me it looks like ivory.:)

    Also there are online guides on how to tell if something is bone or ivory. Just google it. Once you read up on identifying bone or ivory you will know exactly what you got.

    Not exactly true,depending on the orientation of how the tusk is cut there may not be anything specific.The outside layer of dentin can be 10 mm thick and there are no schreger lines.
