Featured Early 1900s French impressionist portrait oil. Do you recognise him? Or the style?

This looks very familiar to me, but I can't pin it down. The name that popped into my mind was Whistler.

Not that this helpful to the OP, but I also went to Whistler. Did not get anywhere with it.

added: Oh, and Mr. Jivvy agrees that it is frustratingly "familiar."

    Whistler looks like a possibility...

One painted portrait and a photo of Whistler:

I don't think Whistler ever carried the weight this painting portrays. And his hair is really curly (I suppose it could be tamed, but the painting doesn't look like tamed hair.)

You know what I think it reminds me of? Velasquez' self portrait in Las Meninas:

So, sort of, nothing to do with anything really.

  7. It can be a portrait or a self-portrait. But so many artists looked like that: Courbet, Delacroix, Carriere, Couture, to name only some of more famous ones. And as far as resemblance goes I would say Johnny Depp.

It's unlikely to be anyone famous. Most portraits aren't. When I said Whistler, I was thinking more stylistically than in terms of the sitter.

I'm not tied at the hip to it. It was just an initial impression.

Have you considered taking it out of the frame to see if it is signed?
