    Christina Naranjo (1892-1980)

[IMG]Christina Naranjo, Santa Clara Pueblo, was the daughter of Sara Fina and Geronimo Tafoya, and the sister to Margaret (and Camilio) Tafoya, all of whom were outstanding potters who were not timid about making very large vessels. Many potters shy away from larger pieces. Not only are they difficult to form, the stone polishing of the slip must not be interrupted until the entire vessel is completed—a task that may include several members of a family taking turns. Additionally, large vessels are more apt to contain air bubbles in the clay, resulting in an explosion during firing.

    Hi,
Ceramics can always explode. I had a plate that I was painting and it was fired twice. I put the gold finish on it
and it was firing with several other peoples items and one piece exploded and ruined every other piece in the kiln. I was so mad. After 10 hours of painting and firing to have it ruined in an instant was heartbreaking. Then I read about some of the pieces of Fiesta where 40 pieces put in the kiln and a piece exploded ruining 38 of the pieces so only 2 escaped.
