I've wasted time in the past fretting over taking off a perfect backing but, like a bandaid, it must be done!

Besides, you may uncover another treasure like Azayamankawin - if you need a tantalizing incentive!

  2. Thank you for your reply. Two or three more pushes and I'll make the jump, I think.

If reading about Azayamankawin didn't convince... :)

But it's just so much better to know what you have!

  4. I made the jump and removed the painting out of its frame to see if there was a signature hidden. There wasn't.

Aahhh.... And now you have to buy tape to put her back in...

  6. Hi Any Jewelry, I did find a very illegible writing in pencil on the backside of the frame that I hadn't noticed before though, because it is virtually invisible against the dark wood, but I examined it closely with a strong light. This photo shows about as much of it as what can be seen with a magnifying glass. So if anybody knows a method of making this inscription better visible? (rubbing with pencil on paper won't do as the writing is too shallow).
    Best regards!

I hit the wall with photoshop - but looks like there's more writing under the tape.

Maybe take a couple more photos in softer light to cut down on the glare?

Jivvy the research is my favorite

It's probably nothing, but I'd do a close look at the lower right.

  11. Thank you Jivvy, I again looked at it closely (and again), it is the darkest part of the painting, but there's no writing underneath.
    Best regards,

    You're welcome, Herb

BTW, is that detail on the original stretchers? Or outside on the newer frame?

I can't tell on my phone...

They really went a little crazy with the tape, didn't they? :)

  13. Yes there are two layers of tape, one very darkened and crumbly and one appr. 20 years. Silverfish have to eat as well.
The detail is on the stretchers (I mistakenly used the word frame in a previous message)
