Old "Eagle" lock box, "Globe", ideas what this was used for?

Finish is a bit worse for the wear, but lock works well, built like a tank, and I have some buyers that like this distressed look.

The word "Globe" painted on front, numbers inside and serial # that matches the key on the inside latch.

11 1/2 x 7 1/2 x 4 inches, weighs almost 6 lbs.

Just a little curious what this would have been used for. Looks like it held 6 items.

Any info about a box like this, the "Globe" name, or what might have been contents? Thanks.

My eyesight is too poor to read what the advertisement of "Automatics" says! So I cannot tell what those are?

Toxic as all get-out though, so they're not in use any more. It would make sense though - fragile "bombs" in a tough box.

Found the exact model. Same "Globe" and "no. 1301" inside.

Me neither. I figured the number was unique to the box but must have been a model number of sorts.

 

I have never seen a fire grenade box that locked..... by the way , carbon tet has some bad juju side effects .... not that I am dead yet... but I only drained about 10 of them drilling w/ a tiny glass drill about 40 years ago.....also had a couple destroyed in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake , decided after that to sell them ...back when you could still sell stuff like this on ebay ( though I sold mine at the flea market) .

I went after the "Eagle Lock" company in Terryville CT. They definitely did make keys at the time "Globe Files Company" was in business from 1882 to 1899 (after it lost the "Files" in its name) when it merged with Wernicke. The "FFEHC" code is not on any current lists for replacement keys, alas.

The "Globe-Wernicke" box is likely the identical box.

 

Fire globes like this saved our house back in the 80s. Jon's brother collected antique fire extinguishers including some of these that were in wall brackets. There was an electrical fire in his bedroom, the globes burst and put out the fire.

 

Its nice to see you have a key.So many will break the lock just to see whats inside,and destroy its collecting value.I would oil the hinges and use it for myself.
