Appears to be a carved mother-of-pearl(?) bead in the form of a barrel. I *think* the bail is gold and looks Victorian to me, but I'm probably wrong. Your thoughts? Thank you!
It's almost certainly satin spar, and a souvenir of Niagara Falls, missing its Stanhope viewer... ~Cheryl
Oh! This makes much sense! I hope that's what it is cause that's a cool thing to have. Since it's jewelry might it commemorate the woman who did that?
I would love to have a Stanhope viewer. Don't usually think of that when looking, but it would be really nice.
Cheryl, you are AWESOME...thank you! I looked inside and there are 7 images of Niagara Falls within. I found a very similar here: http://www.stanhopemicroworks.com/F...Charm-with-Niagara-Stanhope-Viewer_p_422.html Again, thank you so much for your help.
Heh, nice that it's intact - anytime I pick up some little charm or other small object with a hole in it, I look to see if it's a Stanhope... ~Cheryl
I would love to see what's in there but I suppose there's no way to share them. ~ I wonder.... At some car shows you are stopped and you, in the car, are photographed on the way in. Then the photog puts the picture in a tiny viewer for you that is a transparency. You hold it to light and look in the small end. Is this the same method and called 'Stanhope'? I have one of my 1968 Nova SS from years ago now.
KingofThings, in the link in post #8 by 'Nuff_Said, the last image on the page shows an example of a picture that is inside.
@KingofThings is it a viewer like the one in this link http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Lar...828?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c3609f264
Wow! Thanks! I must wake up.... I didn't see that... Part of it is that today I have stuff strewn everywhere sorting and fixing things.
Cool! I loved the Catskills! I'm not sure what family member had a farm there but I went with my Grandma for weeks at a time in the summer when I was quite little. All the fun stuff for me then...chickens/eggs, cows/milk.
As a city girl, I would have loved spending time on a farm! My only visits to the Catskills were two or three vacations at resorts. I found it kind of boring, with the exception of a cool jazz trio in a lounge and a show featuring George Carlin when he was just starting out as a standup comic. That was very memorable!
I have an old Stanhope cross with the Lords prayer...all the fake stones fell out 50 years ago. I LOVE your piece
