I know you only normally see the beautiful or valuable stuff on here but as saving bits of sad totally trashed jewellery seems to be a habit of mine, please can anyone tell me if this necklace is of any age? Or does it just look old as it’s so ruined?.
Please tell me if there is anything of value for me to learn from it or is it one straight for the scrap heap?
I couldn’t even begin to date it myself although I have googled I’m not sure what search term to use!. There is no clasp only what you see.
    Thankyou :)

Presumably pretty hard to date as the old ones look similar to the more modern?

It is called a 'lazo', a lasso. It is worn during the wedding ceremony in a figure eight around the necks of bride and groom to symbolize their shared lives and responsibilties.
Yours looks like it could date from the first half of the 20th century.
When it comes to value, material and condition are more important than date. Yours looks silver plated with considerable loss of plating.:( The cannetille-like spiral wires in the links are unusual, mine has rope-twist coils in the links, which is what I usually see. But I don't think that is enough to have a positive influence on the value.
So what you have is an interesting piece of social history, with some age.:)

Thankyou AJ. I agree it is somewhat preloved to put it mildly!. It arrived in a joblot with other bits that I really wanted so it owes me nothing other than some information about its history that you have all so ably provided :)
