    hello,
I'm looking for help in identifying this Gorham covered dish I found while thrifting.
My research tells me it is from 1869 (as noted with the "B" below the anchor). I can further tell the Greek Key pattern is Etruscan, although that does not match with what I found Etruscan dates (started in 1913). What caught my eye was the quadripartite finial.

Any an all direction would be so helpful and appreciated!

SORRY! pic of bowl is in Metal file under SILVER. My apologies!

Hi, Melissa, and welcome! (Lots of people have a bit of trouble navigating the forum in the beginning!)

    Here are your photos:

    Perhaps a moderator can move this to the SILVER forum ( @daveydempsey ) ( @Bookahtoo ) ?

If Bakers is out there, she'll have info for you! ( @Bakersgma )

Silverplate, the Greek key motif is simply a decorative milled band, nothing to do with the later Etruscan flatware pattern. Pic is unclear, are those ram or steer heads? What is the size?

Doh! See it says 10 IN. on the base...

At that size, was probably sold as covered vegetable or just serving dish.

Replacements has the 050 pattern as silver plate and while they don't show the covered vegetable/casserole, what I do notice is how different the knobs/knops are. Does yours look like it was replaced?

They are both. Two adjacent bulls and two adjacent rams.

To be honest, I do not know how to tell if it has been replaced or not. My guess would be no, I don't believe so, but I'm not very versed in this either.

Melissa, that seller is not in the US and may not be familiar with Gorham marks. As far as I'm concerned, searching for "Gorham" IS the way to go!

Does anyone know if I try to clean this baby up, does that affect it's value?

If something is silver, POLISH it. Yes, it affects the value. many people will not even look at tarnished silver -- the grunge may be hiding all kinds of mayhem! :)

Yes, indeed, it should be polished. However, be very careful & use a MILD polish - a foam, perhaps, or even just a sunshine cloth, depending on how tarnished it is.

Stuff like TARNEX is way too harsh and can remove the silver plating, and vigorous rubbing & scrubbing can do the same (or leave ugly scratches).
