This bible is actually a maroon color. The pictures came out odd. Given to me by an Aunt that passed away 10 years ago. I don't know German. Maybe someone would know the value. The bible is 5" tall, 3 1/4 bible3.png bible1.png bible2.png bible4.png bible5.png bible6.png " wide and has a debth of about 1 1/4"

I don't think that is a Bible. I think it's a prayer book of some kind. Beautiful title page and cover.

Not sure about the title but it might be Christ der Andacht (?) which has something to do with devotion to or worship of Christ. That's not a literal translation since I can't make it out. I don't see an "h" after the first letter but can't read that kind of German script very well. I'm sure that somebody will be along.

Does it have a copyright or publication date anywhere in it? Never mind, I see you put it in your subject line... 1868.

It looks like Geist der Andacht, spirit of devotion.:)
And I agree, not a bible. The cover is beautiful.

Gebetbucher = Prayerbook The preface is something about why there was need for yet another when there were already so many.

Prayer books don't tend to sell for much, but this one looks good so who knows.

Thank you! I was originally thinking the first word was "Grist." Of course, couldn't make sense of that. :)

Ok, I have added what seemed to take me forever the actual color of the prayer book. It printed best over green. Also added the page with the date. The front and back cover are just beautiful. It is sort of like a velvet. bible 7.png bible8.png

1868 is NOT the year of publishing, but the year the Bishop of Chur gave his okay and blarney to the contents of the book. Einsiedeln belongs to the diocese of Chur.

It is a catholic prayer book. The date is from the approval of the bishop. This is not necessarily the date of the printing. If there were multiple printings it could have been printed years or even decades later.
Prayer books like this are beautiful but practically worthless. The binding also looks machine made.
