Welcome, Joshuawon. What makes you think this is a "sugar chest?" Looks like a 2-drawer work table.

Chests for sugar have a bin for sugar storage (top lifts for access), not drawers.

The locking mechanisms I know sugar was stolen when it was highly valued in the earlier times

That's the last thing you should be looking at for intended function, not the first.

1830-1840 Sheraton or late Federal style. As noted by @Bakersgma , not a sugar chest, it's a 2 drawer stand with what looks like poplar secondary wood and breadboard ends on the top which is unusual for a stand.
Very nice example, you did well for $175.

LOL, TOTALLY different piece! with the new pics added, it would have been helpful to see all the pics at once.
It's a desk box on a stand, the breadboard ends make sense now!

Everything else stays the same, Sheraton style, 1830-40 poplar secondary.

I'm confused. . .so the first set of pictures is the stand and now we see the desk box top put on it? And where did you see the price of $175 being paid for it?

The first 2 pics we could not see the slant lid. The last 2 pics we can.
The $175 may have been in a duplicate post OR in photo gallery.
AGREES, it's been a bit disjointed & confusing thread!:confused::confused:

Joshuawon, it's going to be very hard to get to a sugar chest with your piece, it's just to small.

I found the piece you used as an example and the interior, like many food-related pieces of furniture, has compartments. All the sugar chests I've seen in books (never saw one in person) are larger than yours. I agree with James Conrad. Yours is too small.
