With that gold border, I believe it might be a daguerreotype

Hmm, okay thanks! I never heard of a daguerreotype before, but I'll search for it.

I thought that might be an auction thing too, but wasnt sure if it was BiD or BI-D or something weird I dont know about, lol.

Thanks guys, you rock. This has been messing with me for a month. Anything else you can tell me would be appreciated.

After a quick couple of searches, I see now thats exactly what it is, a daguerreotype affixed to an antique postcard. I really appreciate the help. That even helped me figure out its value, sort of. This is a superduper awesome place, you guys rock.

The postal stamp is also a good indicator of age: https://www.matchandmedicine.com/product/r3c-1-cent-proprietary-first-issue-revenue-stamp-mnh-2/

Edit: Looks like red might be even more valuable:

yeah i was just looking at that. lol.

I estimated the postcard and daguerreotype at less than $100, which means I would keep it, but that stamp....

Grrr, this antiques thing is tricky. There are like 100 variations of everything haha.

    Thanks again

Most likely a tintype. Mounted on a cdv style card (not a post card). A daguerreotype or ambrotype would have a glass covering, which would make it much thicker. The stamp is a tax stamp.

Yeah that looks pretty much the same as what I have. The cdv card I have isnt as decorative and might be miscut, but the tintype thing looks really similar and the dates fit better with the stamp (1862-1870something).

One more thing....the stamp. Anybody know how to spot if its the silk type?

I cant seem to post a good scan, lol. I can try again. I looked for blue fibers, but I cant see the back of the stamp. I kinda maybe see one or two but idk...Ugh.

Well, given that its wayyyyy too old to be anyone I may have ever met, lol, I s'pose I'll just sell it or something. Idk. Anyway, I truly appreciate the insight. I was kinda hoping it might have been an old family member or something, but that seems extremely unlikely. Prolly just something she grabbed one day.

Again, thanks so much. Ima complete neophyte about these things. You all rock.

Weren't there times when the Federal government imposed "stamp taxes" on things like legal docs and photographs? Payment was evidenced by the adhered stamp which was franked. I have some rental agreements and leases (New York City) in which a 2X great grandfather was the renter and they all have a small denomination stamp affixed.
