Hi all. I picked this thing up and have since been driven batty trying to figure out A) how to use it B) who made it . You'd think the hand clasps the section above the key ring, and it does, but doesnt seem to hold with keys on it! Is this thing missing a part ? I also tried to find the flying A mark,no luck. Normally I wouldnt ask yall about stuff like this, but Im becoming obsessed. Any input is always appreciated.

Schappierelli was known for using hands in her designs. I didn't think there would be anything that contemporary with her name on it - but it seems possible:

I didnt follow the pinterest links, but there could be something out there :) Google Schiaparelli Keychain hand

    Otherwise, it's a figa - marteax

Does the hand work as a hanger?

It is also used a lot in antique jewellery, from just about all ages, maybe that is where Schiaparelli got her idea from. Hands are for connection, commitment, engagement, marriage, etc etc.
It is not a figa, different position of the fingers.;)

No, I know it's not a true figa - just a sideways reference that might help elsewhere. Used earlier, they had a little more suggestive meaning :angelic: (hence the link :))

Schiaperelli also used lobsters - both in her own surrealistic/outré way.

They are still making them. The Italian explanation is that the devil doesn't like anything to do with love or sex, and it scares him off. Brazilians love it too, adopted from the Portuguese, maybe they have the same explanation.
There is an old Portuguese canon in Indonesia which also has a manu figa. The locals see it as a fertility symbol and visit it when they want to have children.

I had to fix that marteax link - it didn't go to the article in mano figas. This one does, too. Sorry for any ??

Reminds me of the Whiting and Davis snake bracelets, but don't think it's their mark. Johnny, does it look like the key chain ring was added later after something broke off? Would be easy enough to slip that on I suppose if something else broke.

Also, does the hand have any kind of closure mechanism from underneath?

    Unusual!

It may have come as a handbag accessory...

Aigner comes to mind, but this is not their style
