That is my favourite too. Both are beautiful, but this little face is simply gorgeous.

:jimlad:[late night again, and posted on wrong OP last night, corrected  ]

Ok, so I am not finished with the last piece(horse rider), but wanted to get this up. What a beautiful piece and again the mud seems to have been hiding a lot of repair work. The second image shows the horse after I removed as much dirt as possible revealing the cement type adhesive. As you can see, all four legs were broken, the horses neck completely broken, tail area, the mans neck and hat. This is taken a lot of time but worth every second in my opinion. The hoofs actually look a bit like bone(I like that effect, hehehe) ;). A close up of his face show damage as well and you can see on his neck the type of cement they use. Really tuff stuff.

Almost every muscle on the horse comes through too. All three pieces are displayed in the same style box. Does anyone think they all came from the same place and time?

I am wondering, if these are not actually old would someone repair them in this fashion?

Thank you all for enjoying them with me.

awesome pawsome!! was patiently waiting for this. tq!!:happy:
the coloring on all 3 seem to indicate they are "same place same time", no?

i think the display box is quite a common method of display. my parents had a bowl and spoon displayed in a similar way. perhaps someone will know better if you show them the display box? how were they attached to the box? can we see the backs of these beauties?

Thanks both of you. The one thing I find interesting in all three pieces is that they were put together layer by layer. They are not sculptured from a piece of clay nor are they made from a mold. Each item has been attached, i.e. in the strap that goes under the horses neck, while attached to the side of the horse, it hangs loosely around the chest with about 3mm to 5mm gap from his chest. Amazes me how that survived no damage but all the legs were broken.

I also kind of like that the mud was put on to hide damage rather then to fake the age. The breaks dont bother me as long as they are authentic. Love them, very happy

I am not willing to break them away from the board as I fear it may cause damage, if not to all maybe just one(wont risk at this point). I notice some type of glue but also, only on the man with the facial hair there is a wire that goes in and back out an inch away and twist together in the center of the back of box, on the outside. I did untwist it to see if it was holding the figure to the board, but he was still strongly attached.

That said, I can get some images of some areas that protrude off the surface.

On one of the boxes inside the rim on both sides, I just notice some writing in Chinese. My girl is not 100% as it is hand writen what it all says, but say what she can read is more about the box then the figures. See images, maybe someone here can understand all the hand writing aka: @Silver Wolf :) or others :) :)

Will get best pictures I can of backs soon.

Your right. The horse and rider are the most interesting. I can see why even though they were are little damaged, someone took the time to preserve them. You are doing a great job bringing them back.

It is gorgeous, mmarco. I don't mind the breaks, they are beautiful and have a history. Makes you wonder if they were victims of the Cultural Revolution and someone stuck them together and hid them?
I'm sure S Wolf would love to help, but like your girl he has trouble with handwritten Chinese. Maybe @JayBee or @lpan9 can help.:)

    Thank you AJ.

Interesting the timing of hoovers ;) purchase did follow the Chinese Cultural Revolution against bourgeois values, which ended around 1978 and he purchased in San Francisco, our largest port for oriental imports, around 1981 or 1982. Love the way you think :) :)

actually i can't recognize all the words, only some, because whoever wrote the word it looks like he didn't knew how to write chinese hanzi,it looks like 5 yo writing chinese,haha..i assumed maybe those hanzi word was added later by the owner who didn't knew how to write chinese.

by the way seeing your figure closer,i think yours are older than i think before,it looks like way older than 19th century,18th century will be best assume, imho
