Ah yes, a small amount of money included in a gift of a purse or wallet . . . and always with the joking admonition "Don't spend it all in one place." ;)

    >I have a Nantucket Basket necklace.<

Bev, my mother had one, well nearly identical!! Her basket is 3/4" x 5/8". I have it now. Hers has the little penny and an oval of scrimshaw or more likely faux/simulated scrimshaw with an etched hummingbird on the lid. It has "PEWTER © P.A.I." on the inside of the lid and "C pineapple C" on the bottom. Where and when did you get yours? I haven't a clue when or where Mom got hers. I have seen others on the Internet by P.A.I. They were priced all over the place with some claiming they were 24 Kt gold, but had no gold markings. I was surprised to see "Pewter" stamped on mine. The gold color is just goldtone.

LOVE the little baskets! And Bev, the coin reminds me of the converse: one must never give knives to a friend without being paid a penny, elsewise the friendship might be cut.

Steve Gallant Jeweler in Orleans. Friends of a friend stayed over and the kids took my penny, so I had to go get another one.

I finally decided to list this today and in a last ditch attempt to date it, got out a flashlight, held it in my teeth, aimed it at the purse, and scanned this thing all over with a magnifying glass.
I finally made out the mark on one of the round things on the end of the handle - PAT OCT 25 1880.
    HAH! Excellent!
