    Welcome, Aleutia.

Can you please post some closeup photos? It would be helpful in identifying the materials used in your basket, which are important clues to origin. Please include views of the center of the basket and the base (straight on), so we can see how the weaver started, as well as the rim. Also, can you tell us anything about where you are located or where you acquired it?

It looks somewhat similar to Gullah sweetgrass baskets from the South Carolina coast, but it is a very simple form that could have been made elsewhere. More detailed photos may help.

thank you so much for the reply. I’ve included some more closeup pictures of the basket, I hope they are helpful. I got it from a storage unit bought from my boyfriends dad’s grandma, who was an antique collector herself. But we don’t know much about it’s origins beyond that :/ we live in Florida if that means anything.

It appears to be an African basket. I have seen similar ones, with the same stitching technique that joins the coils, identified as being from Senegal and from Mali, in West Africa. That could explain the similarity to Gullah baskets, (which are made by descendants of the slave trade, who were brought to the U.S. from West Africa.)

Keep in mind, however, that this same type of coiled basket, with the wide weft strips that don't cover the bundled coils, is a common export today from Vietnam. It's made relatively quickly (compared to other baskets), and is sturdy, lending itself to a good candidate for an export item.
