Haven't cleaned it up yet. It is really quite pretty. I don't know what it was used for. There are chips on it a piece broken off the top of the lid. It is 5 1/2 " high and 7 " wide. I think this will be a fun to find.

Most likely a biscuit jar by an European company. I know I have seen that mark before, but I can not remember where or what company.

Could you please start using the full image so people on phones can see your images. You might get more responses to your questions.

It's not too late to go back and edit > Full Image

It would not let me put full image on. I had to reduce them. Sorry, I am new and don't know how else to do it.

    Photos look good!

There was a response given on the eBay board about this mark. A rather knowledgeable poster there says it's to keep the center supported during firing and is often found on German pieces and some others.

I find that credible though I imagine there might be some more specific info somewhere.

Seems like a small biscuit jar or large sugar.

I'm not sure that star on the bottom is a mark exactly. Raised center areas on ceramic pieces are more for structure than for marking. They keep the center of the piece elevated.

I'm not sure the star shape is attributable to a particular manufacturer.

sniped I see SIS posted similar info just before me.

Fancier star shape, but the same purpose as the stars found under Japanese pieces. I have 2 myself that were my grandmother's.

    Hi,
I agree with the star being to support the piece during firing. I have seen similar ones on German pieces as well as Japanese pieces. In fact I have seen it on Italian pieces also. I guess if I live longer I will find it on pieces from other countries.

signature.png signature.png signature.png signature.png There is a small red blurred mark on the bottom of this jar. This is the best picture I could get of it. If it helps, good. If not, that is ok.

If you mean on the jar then no. If you mean on the mark on the bottom I enlarged them again. Thank you for your help.

Possibly. Maybe it was washed off. I am one of those people that sees some oddity in everything. Looked like the letter M to me. Just thought I would share it.

By all means, always best to investigate. Maybe someone has a different idea. :) See what others think.
