Just wanted to share my newest acquisition :joyful:
They have some marks but I cannot really tell what they are.

I saw them and I fell in love!

Those are very fine. The cross ought to be a clue. @Any Jewelry ?

Sadly no. They are paste stones but I just love the overall design :)

These are something very specific. Wish I remembered better: something to do with French (Breton?) fishmongers, I think.

    Poissarde earrings.

    Stunning Kasemi.
Fishermen.:) Dutch fishermen wore similar earrings, although they also wore certain types of hoops. Catholic fishermen often added a cross.
But as @kyratango said, these are provincial French, with beautiful Bressans enamel. They have some fashion influence, 1840s-60s, but in rural parts fashions lasted much longer.

This type of earring with the S-wire in the hoop was also used in antiquity. It is still seen in the regional jewellery of several European countries.

Maybe the elaborate hook was to keep the earing from getting pulled/yanked out in a violent sea,and the cross-well a tiny wooden boat in a great ocean that's obvious.
The 'smalls' never stop being amazing and (at least on this Board-inexpensive ).

Thank you for posting that information and links! That's very interesting. :shame: I didn't know men wore them as well. I've been looking for this type of earring for a while. They're not easy to find, especially without repairs or replacements of some kind.

    I love them!
But can someone explain to me how you would wear them?
The upper 'wire' would go trough the earhole, I presume, and the wire with the cross would dangle under the earlobe directly?
Or is it the other side up, because I see a loop where you could put something on to dangle?
Sorry, its a bit confusing for me!:bored:

Yes the upper wire goes through the ear hole and the s wire is below. You also insert them from behind the earlobe as the wires close in the front. I have quite a few of dormeuses that also close in the front. It's a little fiddly but you get used to it :joyful:

Ahhh ok, yes, I have dormeuses that close on the front and wearing them right now. These closures are very secure.
The second wire with the cross was new to me, now its clear, thanks!

I never could get used to them.:( I have thick earlobes and those wires get lost in my flesh.:nurse:
I sold a beautiful pair of Italian earrings because I couldn't wear them.:arghh:
They were used on land, by elegant ladies in Antiquity, before they were used on sea.;)
