Okay I will readily admit I know nothing about books.

A friend of mine gave me a box of books to sell for her and she said they may or may not be worth anything but she really didn't know what all was there. When got home and started going through all these books I came across this one.

This book looks much older then most the others and they are all between 1899 and 1914.

This one doesn't have a date anywhere it just has the name of the publisher.

I am actually afraid to open it cause it seems super delicate. It has 184 pages. No dust jacket. Anyone have any idea how old it may be? I included pictures of the only page that even mentions the publisher. The next page is the contents and the backside of this page is completely blank.

Like I said I really don't know anything about books so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thanks! Bummer. I got excited for a minuet cause it looks so dang old. Well I guess technically it is old but not old enough. Sigh... Oh well. Thanks again.

    Hi Robin,
I don't get excited over books anymore. I found an Anglican prayer book that had the prayers for Queen Elizabeth I. I thought it was 300 years old. Well it was 200 yrs old but only worth 40 bucks.

I get excited over books! Hey, your book may not be worth tons of money, but personally, I'd find it rather charming to own a Jules Verne book, with no date, and not titled "Around the World in Eighty Days!"

My husband wants it. He is a huge fan. Me, I don't know? I am kind of more a technical book kind of gal. I couldn't even sit through the movie. I love anything with the title Idiots Guide... or ...for Dummies. I know, I know. LOL! :)

I am afraid it is horrible shape. I don't even want to open it cause I am afraid it is going to disintegrate.

Ah..... I was going to ask about it but I see hubby likes it so... :) :(
In future try using abebooks and Quill & Brush for rough pricing.

Any navy related books in the group?
    Thanks!

LOL! Well whether he wants it or not it will most likely be going to auction. He just likes the story. When I pulled it out of the box and read the spine he came running over.

Now I will tell you that this same lady said she has a very nice, very old, leather bound Jules Verne. She wrapped it in a cloth and stored it somewhere. She needed to work her way back to it but she plans to add it to the bunch. I don't know if it is around the world in 80 days but I will definitely keep you posted if it comes up. She is a book worm unlike I have ever seen. :) She must have thousands.

There is one here. It isn't navy per say but it's called The Haunted Hanger by Van Powell It actually has the dust cover still on it. The printing of this one was 1932. I need to get some photos of these guys cause some of them are pretty neat looking. The Van Powell has a picture of two men fighting? on a little dingy boat with a old war plan in the back. It is kind of hard to describe. I will get some pictures of these and post them later. There may be something good in here after all.

This box has tons of Zane Grey, Carolyn Keene, a couple of Alexandre Dumas one that I am a little fond of cause it's about a dog. It's called Dusty by Hinkle dated 1940. It has a nice wolfhound looking dog illustrated on the inside of the cover.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

It looks like the paper might be the type that gets very brittle with age. Often late 19th to early 20th century paper in books does that.

I am curious about one thing. In the lines under the name "Jules Verne" --

how is the word before "Island" spelled? Is that an "x" at the end?

Hi! Wow! Sounds like an exciting adventure! :)
The Haunted Hanger by Van Powell is on mebay a few times and varies for as low as 7.95 with a nice cover though some have been drinking heavily it appears for pricing! The highest valued one on abebooks is 13.50. ;)

Foxing is a brown mark made by bacterial activity in some forms of paper.

I have some 1870s editions of Jules Verne in the shed, but they are French editions dating from before the US editions. Trouble is for the modest value they are really to heavy to offer for sale.

I thought foxing was from iron in the paper rusting....

Check the Zane Greys for baseball or sporting (fishing) topics. They're where the money is for this Author. Not so much the westerns.

    (YAY...my thousandth post!...finally.)
