I was wondering about this wicker one. It’a a cool thing and well constructed. It’s 45cm long,32cm wide and 11cm deep. Any comments appreciated. Thank you and keep well

Looks Indonesian to me. I have similar ones with bamboo frames, but I've seen them with wooden frames as well.

Thanks for the comment. I also came to a ‘serving tray basket’ conclusion (I see some that holds glass casseroles) However there’s no metal wire on this, just twine.. (dyed twine)

No worries. I see what you mean,in that pic it does look like wire (or even staples)

Thanks for the reply. That’s interesting information. Overall the basket is attractive and has a ‘good’ look (well to me) But I agree with you it doesn’t look and ‘feel’ old to me as I initially thought.

But someone did put a lot of work in making the basket and I can appreciate that and the skill.

More thoughts - I have seen the Shanxi baskets described as being made of wood (elm, when specified) and reed or willow. From your closeups, it looks like the "fabric" of your basket is made of willow - you can see the tell tale leaf scars. The binding around the wood frame certainly looks like willow skeins (split willow). The whole thing seems to have an artificial patina - the kind of antiquing you often see on recent imports. It might be Chinese, a modern imitation of their own older styles, or it might be Indonesian, as Any suggested.

my comment was meant to imply that your photo's are indeed good.....and the latter ones are even better !:woot:

Sorry if that did not come across as I intended !:sorry:

Ok. Well you provide mainly answers and have very little questions. Hence no need for photos :)
Well, I appreciate that. But looking at some of the other photos that get posted I often think I should improve.

Anyway I really appreciate and enjoy this forum and all the knowledge that is so openly shared. A great place to learn!
    Thank you all

All very interesting. Thanks for the additional information. Agreed,I think the whole thing has been varnished, dyed or stained to give it an older look (yes, antiquing)
