    Hello friends <3 x x x

I thought I'd taken a pic of a solo black bead I am sure is glass, but apparently I didn't.
(I almost think too many pics are as bad as too few but I have taken a tonne as I can't get a really good one.)
Despite having so many, still don't have one of the solo one.

These are warmer than glass, and they don't look all the same exactly BUT we know how I am so I could be right out xx
I scratched on the bottom of a tile as Mrs. Google instructed me,and I got a brown line with the necklace and nothing with the solo glass bead.

Here are the many but not very good images xx

(I have had them for years, and as with all my stuffs not many pennies invested so don't worry about me feelings)

( Couldn't help myself ...I have to copy pics from Facebook to get them the right size and this was also on there and couldn't leave her out.

THis is where I got it from (never do I have my own questions that start * where did I * answered so quickly, how did I manage to refind it?!)

Natural jet will be very light in weight in comparison to French jet, which is actually black glass. It will also be room temperature rather than cold like glass. It's also interesting to note that jet will not scratch glass, but glass will indeed scratch jet.

Touched by a hot pin (very carefully and in an inconspicuous place to avoid damaging the jewelry being tested), Lisa Stockhammer of www.georgianjewelry.com noted, "it may smell earthy or coal-like" - since it is indeed a type of coal. A less risky method of testing: take the piece in question and scrape an inconspicuous area on a rough surface like the back of a ceramic tile or the bottom of a piece of unglazed porcelain. If it leaves a brown mark, the piece is likely jet (although vulcanite can also leave a brown mark, so be sure to look for other jet attributes before making that call).

I just opened my jet jewellery box to test again, and found a note (in my own handwriting!) saying:
    Good quality - rusty stripe
    Poor quality - black stripe
I remember someone in Whitby explaining this to me.
So I tested my jet again, some are black (poor:arghh: ), some are rusty. I think your brown stripes would qualify as rusty (yay!).:)
I guess the black stripe comes from jet that is a bit closer to coal.

I don't know, here is info from the Whitby Museum website:

"Most of these [imitations] do not leave a brown streak when rubbed on a piece of unglazed porcelain though ebonite or vulcanite will. The definitive test is to use a red hot needle on some inconspicuous part of the item when a coal-burning smell will ensue. However be very careful not to destroy or damage the item, remember Jet will burn. A safer way is to closely examine the item in question – signs of moulding (rounded edges rather than the sharp edges obtained by carving) or fading in sunlight to a khaki colour are sure signs that the item is an imitation."

Those rounded edges on the facets of your beads look like molding, but others may see it differently. Maybe vulcanite?

Can't help with question(s) but . . . I "second" everyone who has said that Miss Luna is a beauty!!! What a sweet-looking pup she is. I'm a sucker for "tipped" ears. ;)

With the charcoal streak, if the beads are not all identical in size & shape, I vote jet. Vulcanite & similar do not take a high polish & tend to turn brownish over time. Polished jet is so shiny & light in weight, it can seem like plastic. The lone bead sounds like glass. Pearls with the jet also look like glass. Hey, Cuz, howya doin'?

    Luna looks like a luv.

Hey Cuz! I am good, hope you are doing well too x x
    Very interesting info,thank you xxx
I think the lone bead was glass, I compared them and it felt not as *soft*, as these, for want of a better word xx

I have been picking up odd bits from car boots etc for literally years, and have tonnes of little weird bits stashed away and some of these are black ( ish in some cases) and I need to try and find some of them ( I can't say all, too big a task ) and I'd like to try and find out what they are, too. One is a big broken brooch ( say that with a mouthful of Maltesters) but god only knows where they are. Not sure even he/she knows actually .

    Again thank you everyone x x x

I pulled C. Jeanenne Bell's 'How to be a Jewelry Detective' from a stack of older jewellery books, I remembered her saying something about testing jet. She says black or brownish black stripe.
Maybe it is different for jet from different regions?

I thought that about vulcanite as well, but saw this on the Jet Imitations site:
