IMO it looks like a socialist realism statue from GDR - mine worker. Working class was the favourite subject of the socialist art, the harder the labour, the better. The other favourite was the class struggle - workers or partisans beaten or wounded, or dead.

I am not an expert though, could be wrong.

I can only imagine that era.The creeping weirdness here in the US isn't the GDR,but still quite surreal in it's own way.I really don't know what Taylor Green & Boebert are.

Lunatics, plain and simple Bosko. Its a scary time in this country, but we have to take those types seriously or else we are Germany ,circa 1932.Lots of those folks laughed at Hitler, and we all know how that story ended.Oh and I love that statue !

Of course I know well! I remember how I was repetedly told by Mom not to tell anyone about the things they were talking with Dad that I happened to overhear. Honestly, I don't even remember what they were talking about, just remember the intense feeling of danger coming from my Mom and her sharp gaze fixed on me, and her low husky voice "be careful not to drop a word outside!". Her behaviour was so menacing that I did not ask why but I knew I should obey. Mind that they were not any fighters against the system or conspirators - just an ordinary couple.

The film is really good, though.

Actually, spying and snitching on parents was promoted by the system - I remember that we studied at school the story of Pavlik Morozov as a good example of a faithful loyal pioneer.

Yes, I remember friends from the GDR telling me the same.
Just one single word can be misinterpreted, and usually will be in a totalitarian system. Those systems are driven by fear, and their weapon is aggression, even against their own, who could be 'the enemy from within'.
I am glad you didn't let slip even an innocent word, you were a good daughter.:)

We have a few unsavoury politicians here. They sound ridiculous, but I take them very seriously. I grew up with daily stories of WWII, need I say more....

    True, true.

Well, there might be more that a single innocent word - discontent about the shortcomings of the system or some inconvenient fact from my Mom's past - she was from a wealthy villagers' family and her father had owned a mechanical mill which had been nationalised (I found out about it after the Change, in fact) which was something to be hidden and not spoken of. Dad was proletariat, he had nothing to fear :).

I was too frightened to breach her order :) not my merit here.

Ah yes, "capitalists", always suspect in a system like that.
Your parent's certainly knew how to keep quiet. That probably saved their lives.

:shy::). I like to find out about things, just about everything, within my ability.
And my parents had many refugee friends, so I heard stories from an early age. I was one of those children who always sat with 'the old folks', and listened quietly.

You didn't, but you must have stayed close to her old house, because you stayed close to the church.;)
A strong woman, one of our wartime heroes, who saved many Jewish people. She survived Ravensbrück due to an administrative error, but her father, sister, and cousin were murdered by the Nazis.

Stories like theirs should never be forgotten, especially at times like these.
