I found this in a thrift store Friday - at first I thought it was a dog saving somebody; dragging them to safety - but a closer look from the bottom shows there's no head & it hasn't been broken off.
Has anyone seen this before? Is it brass? Bronze?(!) Any idea of age?
    Thanks all!

    Looks very 1950-esque to me.

Might be a pipe rest, nice.

I think it's earlier. This kind of novelty was big in the early 20th. Really nice thing.

Look for the second piece, a brass lady stepping out onto the coat rather than a puddle.

I'll look tomorrow but if it was there I didn't see it - and if it came out later I'm sure someone got it.

Little Boston Terrier. Popular 1910s, 1920s and 1930s.

Looks like a dog pulling at someone's overcoat (I see sleeves & buttons).

    Adorable!!

Animal-themed kitschy stuff was really popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s. I've seen numerous examples in silverware.

Thanks all - should I list it as a pipe holder or ashtray?

It looks like an ashtray to me! The sleeve at the bottom appears to be rumpled to hold a cigarette? --Do you see that?

I’d list it as both. Let the buyer decide and double your keywords. Very well may be a Boston Terrier as someone said. I’d also put “Pug” in my listing. Antique Pug stuff is very collectible and it doesn’t look much unlike one to me. I’ve found a huge percentage of antique dog stuff to either be a bulldog or pug. Of course many breeds are represented on different things in different eras but those two breeds were particularly popular around the end of the Victorian era. So were Boston Terriers as evidenced particularly by Hubleys doorstops. Neat little thing.

Thanks - I'll try to find it tomorrow; I have a old print of a Dr. pug caring for a sick pug!

Brass will be lighter, yellowish tone copper cut with zinc- bronze is more brownish tone copper cut with nickel. Yours is looking more like brass.
