Nope. Didn't notice that before, but the gentleman has damaged his hand in some way and is wearing a finger cot* and perhaps a second one, which are held on with a wrist tie.

(Learned on a board last year what a finger cot was! Who knew?!)

Re-looking. Since it is attached to the thumb and forefinger he may have tried to pick up a hot potato!

His finger is bandaged, and part of the gauze is then taken back and tied around the wrist.
It was to help keep the bandage on the finger, as they have a habit of slipping off.

    No rosary.

    Hi,
I see his bandaged finger but the metal above his hands is a watch fob.

    Hi,
Have to ask Fid aren't tintypes reversed right to left? i know one type of photo is that way, so it may be left sleeve instead of right.

I thought that too...for a moment....but isn't that type of fob attached to the vest button hole, with a chain going in the side pocket. ??

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

    Greg,

Yes, tintypes are laterally reversed, unless the photographer used a special mirror to flip the image.

Daguerreotypes and ambrotypes are also laterally reversed images.

Nice detail catch! Disappointed I missed it! Too keyed on the patch.
Here is the first answer from a new site I use> "Not Navy or military. That is civilian fashion, very popular 1910-1920"

I'm searching the time period for photos of similar, but have come up empty. Any terms I should use?

I tried 'women's military fashion' for those years but got the-run around.
That's the only response so far on the site but I expect more. I did learn that Abercrombie & Fitch made women's uniforms and maybe they made this in their line. You might even email them. :)

This is the latest response I have received> 'It is called a midi rate -- late 19th early 20th century fashion statement--sometimes they actually used real rates---and also real symbols on bizarre colors'
