Looking for info about some estate sale purchases

Hi all! I posted awhile back about my mom, who refurbishes furniture, and you guys gave me some fantastic information about a desk she refinished.

Mom recently bought a couple pieces at an estate sale - she usually doesn't buy higher end stuff to refurbish (most of her stuff is thrift store finds or from Habitat for Humanity), and she generally resurfaces and paints them to sell.

These are a little bit more expensive than her usual repitoire, and we want to make sure she's doing right by them. Was hoping you guys might be able to tell us a little more about them, style/period wise?

The mirrored piece is something she plans to keep for herself (it's a bit dirty, these were taken at the estate sale).

The table, chairs, and buffet (looks similar to tigerwood) she plans to sell. Any info would be hugely appreciated, she's afraid to even touch them to clean, let alone work on, until she's sure of what she has. Thanks!

Late 19th, Early 20th centuries.....Empire style, Oak wood....If I'm still remembering correctly!!

The first Tyden patent number shown appears on the 1900 patent list.

That "tigerwood" is quarter-sawn oak. Very popular around 1900.

 

I love the sideboard. I personally wouldnt touch it,its in amazing condition.

 

Okay, possible silly question here, i understand the purpose of patents on the whole, but as far as furniture, what purpose do they serve? Is it strictly for the specific style, or was Tyden a very popular brand just trying to prevent knock offs? I tried doing some brief Google searches about the company, seeing lots of patents and lock tables, but not much about the company? Is there a good website resource for different furniture manufacturers that might enlighten me?

Or were furniture patents in general more relative to the age of the piece/being of higher quality furniture due to the era?

 

Or could the Tyden part have something to do with this piece? (taking a guess based on the number of Tyden Lock patents i came across online).

 

Seems like Emil Tyden was a creative soul. Found this photo showing the Tyden Seal building and the Hastings Table Co factory building in Hastings side by side.

I wouldn't mess with that set. It's too nice. The table and chairs aren't horribly interesting but that sideboard... Please just give it a coat of paste wax and let be.

Sideboard (buffet) is Empire Revival circa 1910. As mentioned, quartersawn oak. Not terribly popular right now but this seems in good condition and would be a shame to paint it. The dining set is maybe just a tad later with the square pedistal being a nod to mission styling. The legs and corner details are decidedly not mission. The chairs are called t-backs.

As an aside, our local Goodwill has a similar set with 6 original leaves for sale for $125.00. The table is more mission than this one but the chairs are very similar. I thought is a very good buy but it has been in the store nearly a week with no takers so far. Makes me sorry that I am no longer in the business. I would have snatched it up in a heartbeat.

 

Wow! Good find! That's a lot of oak there! That vanity is particularly interesting.

I love the vanity - the picture is a bit blurry, and there's definitely a lot of cleaning up to be done, but it's incredibly beautiful in person - very, very heavy with quite a lot of detail. It's a bit of a darker wood hue than mom or i have in our houses, but I don't think she's going to give it up. She usually buys for rehabbing to sell. Not sure what her plans are for it yet, we're going to try to remove as much of the dirt/dust as possible, and then decide. A little scary, since it's one of the fanciest pieces she's bought, so we are terrified of damaging it at all. Any guesses on the possible age or period?

 

The vanity is circa 1920. Just prior to WWI to depression era. Part of the historical revival movement. Doesn't really replicate a particular style but uses elements from several. Looks to be better quality than most we see. I would look for a label. There are a couple makers worth restoring.

 

Was back at the thrift and the table and chair set is still there. I was wrong about the price. It is only $109.00. Man, I am tempted. I really like the table better than one I currently own. Here is a pic.

 

None of my business but... I think you should go for it. A convivial set. Just needs a polish and an (easy) replacement of the 1970s chair fabric.

Id jump on that for $109. Im dying to get rid of our table and chairs,but my mom is too attached to it.Its a wire ice cream parlor set with the most uncomfortable chairs on planet Earth ! I drug it in lo 30 years ago,and have regretted giving it to her since.
