I pushed the boat out with this at £20 but I thought it was such a lovely thing. It needs to be mended as a ring has been broken off.
Is there any clue to the age of this please? I can’t see any marks anywhere.
    Thanks for looking :)

Late 19th-very early 20th imo. The flowers have a hint of Art Nouveau, and the striated rings are a bit Arts & Crafts.
    Nice find, K.

Hm. I can't quite decide if it's Edwardian or later revival. My spidey sense thinks later.

Would a chatelaine be of use when fashion styles had changed and everyone had handbags and pockets?

Going to search through my stash to see if I can find a similar ring to mend it.
    Thankyou :)
I’ll look up some more examples online to get some ideas. What date would later revival be?

I can remember buying things that hung off belts to be decorative in the early seventies?

I can't remember, I must be getting old.:hilarious: Or maybe we didn't have those in Oz.

I would suggest that if you can't find a suitable link and can't get it repaired that you remove that link plus the one on the other side and replace them with matching links (to each other). If it' brass it could be repaired fairly easily. If it's nickel or pot metal, not so easily. I might remind AJ that the victorians had pockets and chatelaine purses were still in style in the 20's.

It doesn't read as really old to me either. The casting isn't good enough. If it's brass it won't be a hard fix. Pot metal, and unless you can find a guy (it's always a guy) handy with a laser welder, she's for it I'm afraid.

I think it’s brass. I’ll see what I can do with it :)

Absolutely, but pockets weren't as widespread in women's clothing.
I think when obb said revival, she meant later than the 20s. I have a photo of my great-grandmother in the 20s, with a silver chatelaine with silver mounted purse. Sitting on a beach, of all places.;)

KSW's chatelaine is more elaborate though, probably for sewing implements etc.

    Gorilla Glue will do it.

It's the casting that's making me a bit dubious, I think.
