I got these two fantastic lamps yesterday. When I went to take pictures this morning I noticed that someone had cleaned one with a scritchy and it is all scratched up on all the smooth surfaces on the front!
Is there a way that I can minimize the scratches?
If not, how should I sell them? Will the scratches on one discourage someone from buying the pair?
    Help please!

Autosol metal polish will remove the scratches.

Thanks Davey. If there is a coating on the brass, do I have to replace it?

    Oh I don`t know.
    Is it solid brass ?

Hmm - probably not as it comes in different finishes. How do I tell?

if you wet your finger and run it across, do the scratches basically disappear? If so, a coat of clear spray acrylic lacquer should do the same permanently.

Hi Brad - on the top sections they disappear - not on the bottom. Someone really scrubbed it.

You could try an electric buffer/polisher
with Autosol, jewelers paste or even DSS`s Brasso :D

I don't want them to look different, unless there's no choice. Then it's back to the question sell singly or as a pair.

If they look different after polishing, paint em both pink :D:D:D

    Hi Book,
Some one who is really into those lamps will not care if they look slightly different. They would probably want to redo them themselves. If they don't they will most likely not be close together so to make a big difference.

Sounds like the scratches are not just in the surface but, rather, down to base metal in some places. There appears to be loss of some type of applied finish where you can not restore the look. Your only solution would be to somehow restore the lost finish but, not knowing how it was applied, this will be next to impossible.

If you knew the base metal is brass, you could try and re-patinate it with a brown patina and clear coat afterwards. It might not match exactly, but would certainly look a lot better. If the base metal is pot metal, the finish must be some type of plating or a paint treatment. Either would be very difficult to replicate.

If you couldn't get it to match, I would be tempted to paint the affected areas with something contrasting (black) so that it looks like it was intentional. In such case, I would sell them separately.

    Eek - you're a braver human than I Brad.
I think considering the value of the lamps and my lack of knowledge and skill, I better just leave them alone.
Thanks for your help and advice Davey, Brad and Greg.

I'd leave bad enough alone too. Much safer.

    Those lamps are SO cool!!!

I think I'd leave it to the new owner. Definitely play up "matching set".
