Interesting ring. Called native & turquoise, looks neither

That particular ring may have been but the general style seems to be widely accepted as Zuni. The ring that I posted was not made by Bell Trading Post. My comment was more guided to the fact that the style of ring seems to be NA when I thought originally that it didn’t strike me as NA.

Great ring. Didn’t read through everything but it’s Zuni snake eye (over petit point) and they’re usually turquoise. I’ve been told that the green were also done in glass.

People cross over terms all the time but as a rule petit point is rounded on one end (pear) needle point is pointed on both ends (skinny like a needle) and snake eye is round although I agree that petit point is used for all but snake eye is very collectible so that’s the term that should be used on small round stones.

I’m not familiar with snake eye pieces in variscite.

I’m not sure on that listing. They state it is NA but Navajo so even if made commercially IMO it’s still NA-Navajo copying Zuni style although i agree that the law states both tribe and maker be known but I’d still consider the ring in the link to be Navajo-it’s stated as Navajo.

i consider the green Zuni too and snake eye pieces are traditionally Zuni. Even the Bell piece is NA since it was made by Navajo artists copying Zuni style.

Not IMO. The linked ring is stated as Navajo made by a respected commercial company. That’s good enough for me although I’d never buy it since it’s not Zuni and none of them from that timeframe are signed.

    Neither am I.
    Agree.
It is Navajo made, just like most Bell's sterling and turquoise jewellery. Navajo made means NA made, there are no two ways about it. Navajo made for a commercial company doesn't make the person who made it any less Navajo. If it was made by a Navajo, by simple logic it can't have been made a non-Navajo.
Quite a few NA silversmiths began their career working for companies like Bell's, and went on to work for themselves.

The ring J posted is a certain Zuni style ring that I've seen before quite a few times. Most of those rings were not marked by the maker. IMO it is an older ring, with lovely older turquoise, that has been handled a lot. Older generally means unmarked.
The law is only relevant if you want to sell it in the US.

I have said it before, that specific law completely ignores older NA jewellery, which was usually unmarked. It denies a long period of NA jewellery making, and some important names in NA jewellery (Frank Dishta etc). Consequently it denies part of NA culture and history.
If we base our opinion on whether an item is NA made or not on that law, we collaborate in denying part of NA culture. I for one am not prepared to do that.

Some of the most incredible NA pieces lack a signature and/or purity marks. When jewelry making was a craft rather than a business venture. An older piece without markings is actually much more desirable

Lots of great information and debate here. A nice little knowledge upload for me and hopefully some others. It didn’t look like a sure fire profit making venture for me but very happy Kiko ended up with a beautiful ring. The seller seemed to know their stuff pretty well so it’s good that their attribution was right even when I was curious about it. It’s really beautiful intricate little work on these.

TY and so true. Some of the US laws are insane. Here’s another for you-python is legal in every US state EXCEPT California. You can’t sell it in CA. Totally illegal and stores get high fines if caught.

Lawmakers in general, not just in the US, don't think things through. It seems like a good idea for five minutes, but they don't take the time to think of all the implications. And they don't consult experts or people in the field.
