First, I must admit I know less than nothing about art. This came in a lot of china & pottery I recently purchased at auction. I am not under the delusion that it has monetary value, more just curious and eager to learn. Is this a home project trying to imitate something old that's gone awry or was there a time when pieces were done this way? It appears to be a print attached to something else that wraps around a stiff board (not as stiff as wood more like cardboard ) and a final layer over the wrap. I'm perplexed. Can anyone enlighten me?

Seems to me not much more cbe said over your conclusion.
Print. Attached on cardboard. Neglectable worth. Most likely a worth as filling material* your seller thought.
Where the print came from? Could be anywhere.

    * Did you know a lot of China, nowadays highly wanted, in the beginning came to the Netherlands/europe as filling and ships ballast on the highly valluable spices.
Nowadays bulk traders still sometimes receive cargo with cheap objects as filling.
