Picked up this Restaurant ware mug at an estate sale. Looks hand done by Willy. The cod was a diesel mug. Wondering if anyone knows what the symbol on back is. Should be what this person did on the sub. The mug is unmarked.

It doesn't look like any rating insignia that I can find. I wonder if it's a joke/made-up insignia. The gold dolphins on the other side imply that he may have earned his qualification in submarines, which was and still is a big deal for submariners. Gold dolphins are for officer, and silver for enlisted men.

The other symbol implies he was on a nuke, and I'd bet the sailor crossed the international Date Line and the Equator. Maybe at the same time. The back looks like Klingon.:p:p:p

It sure does look like Klingon!
Also, Willy was a mechanic, very proud of his tools. USS Cod indeed!

It's absolutely Klingon. And why has he got a knobkerrie, eh?

Not I am not sure this is from The USS Cod as someone had told me. Here is another mug. Same gold logo but different sub name. Can't really copy and paste the link. But this is a current Ebay auction.

One man's knobkerrie, is another "man's tool".

They may have been having a "wee" bit of fun with you and mechanic "Willy".

They may have arts and craft on submarines!?

A friend who knows a little about it says the Klingon is Japanese, written in a script that is used for foreign words.

The Ratings symbol (under "Willie") is Electronics Technician.
