Featured Weird trombone clasp huge brooch probably silver

God, this needs a careful clean. Appears to be silver with gold highlights. Oddly the stone is backed with wired in black velvet. A impossible mark on the pin. And the stone - not amber, it's stone cold. And heavy. I don't think glass either. It has a crackle to it which is hell's own job to capture, but quite lovely. I know there's a stone I've had before, but my brain has forgotten.

Opinions?

Looks heavy, would pull down a delicate fabric I suppose. Think it’s gorgeous, a cushion of orange fire.

 

I shall have a go at cleaning it tomorrow, that may be interesting.

 

Sunstone? The real stuff?

 

I had something else in my head, which I think was wrong. Sunstone looks far more possible, thank you. It's one hell of a stone: I can't get the crackle depth to show.

Here I am. I agree with sunstone, which is a kind of feldspar. If I remember correctly, the sparkle and crackle is caused by hematite inclusions, but you may have to check that.

That gorgeous ajour mount looks like those on some agate pillboxes. You know the type, agates in lid and bottom, and silver ajour sides.
I have one which I may have bought in Germany. Unmarked, but tests as silver.

It's a fabulous stone, it really is. Yes, I do know the kind you mean. The odd thing is that velvet innard - and whatver the damn mark is.

 

I wonder if it was made from a ring box of the same type as the pill boxes? Maybe an engagement or wedding ring was presented in the box, and the box was a precious memory preserved as a brooch? Just thinking aloud.
