Hi experts - hoping someone can help to identify the maker of this pretty little makeup compact. It looks like it originally held rouge behind the mirror and powder in a removable metal liner. The outside has gorgeous flower detailing in metal over enamel. There is a name under the metal liner but it's very, very hard to make out even with a magnifier - and I usually have pretty sharp eyes. Any info would be much appreciated!

The writing looks like it's a mirror image of the way we would normally write it.

Well, the image was upside down for starters.....once rotated, and played with, I almost want to say it says "Lord & Taylors", New York but can't be sure........b & w first, then color, it's New York, just not positive on the first name!!! What do you think, @Bakersgma??? Or anyone else, for that matter??

Ah! The department store name is Lord & Taylor, not Taylor's at the end, but that's great progress, Aqui!

Pretty, but I disagree with the seller, the design is not Art Nouveau to my eye.

No one in this thread called it Art Nouveau - not sure where that came from.
From looking at comparable items, it seems like it is most likely circa 1930s, so definitely later than Nouveau period.

One other thing. I've had boxes with this brass floral overlay over MOP which were Indian. So it's feasible this was made there and branded.

Langlois was a United/Rexall Drugstore brand, if I recall correctly, the 'Shari' line dated from the mid '20s, this one of the early compacts, bit less common with the pearl celluloid background - a specialist in compacts, etc. might date it more precisely (I'd think American-made).

bluumz- nice ID work on the compact.Don't want to ask a magician how the trick was done (but...),were you able to find this resource using Google Lens ? -so much of the time it returns gibberish to me,is there perhaps a more refined visual identification program ?

    Thanks! :shame:

I've researched a few compacts that I've had in the past and I was familiar with the Langlois name, it was as simple as that.
I've actually never used Google Lens and don't know the first think about how to go about that.
