Featured Pendant marked Italy, is it broken or missing parts?

This pendant has orange plastic/acrylic cabs that look like they have been replacement as the setting is off. But what is really curious, to me at least, is that the back frame opens up. Is it missing something? If not, why is it constructed this way? As always, thank you for any help.

 

It is a dress clip imo. It is very charming.

 

Thanks Any. I didn't even consider a dress clip. So, would the chain not be original to the piece?

 

Agreed, dress clip which has been hung on a chain.

 

I don't see any prongs and it looks a bit late for a dress clip. I'd say scarf clip that's been hung on a chain. Cute little mousie too.

 

No real knowledge to add bit just wanted to say...a few years back I was looking for earrings to go with my great-grandmother's necklace for a wedding. I ended up only finding some old clips which I hung from ear hooks. I loved it. If you love it as a necklace, wear the cliplace! It's pretty!

 

Thanks for the responses. A scarf clip! Evelb30, thank you. I see it now and thanks for id of the mouse! I see that now as well. I suspect the loop where a jump ring was added to put it on a chain was originally, maybe, its tail. It's cute and I am glad to have it identified.
