Don, there's a bit of info at the site below, including this, about "how to date" the knife:

Schrade knives dating from 1904 to the World War I period are marked "Schrade Cut Co." and "Walden, N.Y." in arched letters. Knives marked "Schrade Cut Co." in a straight line were made between World War I and 1947. From 1947 to 1973, Schrade knives were marked "Schrade Walden." Knives marked "Schrade N.Y. USA" or "Schrade USA" were manufactured between 1973 and 2004.

    Edited to add:

Looks like a straight line, so, based on the site noted, "between World War I and 1947"

Why that would be inscribed on a pocket knife...is beyond me......but it must have held a special significance to Dons Great Granddad.........

Maybe it was for trimming Shabbos candles? Not on the Sabbath obviously but something of the sort.

    This is Challah...

The knife is for slicing and serving the bread. I have seen one of these knives - BIG one - with a solid silver handle. Didn't know they made folding versions.

    Silver challah knife...

I saw one of these at a flea-market once, being sold by a guy who had all kinds of old Judaica silverware.

I bet this was for traveling as well as at home use if money was short and they could only have one knife for this purpose.
    What a lovely item.
    Holla for the Challah knife.

And for challah! I've never seen the little loaves before. The big ones have me wanting pain perdu/french toast. Not that much challah gets left over in these parts.

I have 3 Challah knives...all long like Shang has shown...all serrated.....
I have never seen or heard of a folding pocket knife used to cut a challah....and that small clip point blade would tear up a loaf badly....

Now...Don....where did Grandma come from ?
I'm thinking this blade would serve better to slaughter a Sabbath chicken......than cut a bread !
