I have not all understand but for me certainly not swiss(the mix of pyrography and parts of animals are really not the taste) but german or austrian certainly, what shocked me is the manner how the hinges are fixed, not very in accordance with the item…

I think that is a later 'repair'. Very crudely done, and I agree, not true to the item. It probably had thin nails, the holes of which wear out after years of use.
I usually repair that with a thin piece of wood in the holes and gently hammering the original nails back in, but for some people big screws do the job as well.:hilarious:

S Wolf, you could still replace the screws with small nails. Lecollect may have a more expert way than mine to fix the big holes.;)

When a box is made by a craftsman, the hinges are never applied outside if they don't give more pleasant aspect, in this case the hinges are normally in a small cut part of the lid and you have to see only a rounded part of them, this "repair" is clearly actual and made by somebody who has never look to the pleasant aspect of such item, just made it as a box for workshop or for nails with material he has under his hands(my translation from french…).

Don't worry, it is perfectly understandable, and a good explanation of the hard life this poor box had before it was rescued.;) I agree, it probably had a nicer hinge, set in a better way.

Personally, the pokerwork reminds me of pieces from Romania and Bulgaria, it's interesting and I like it, but not seeing great quality, very clear that the hinge screws are replacements (they even poke through to the interior), and the hinges look like they're probably replacements too, but see no indication that the box had anything other than similar simple surface-mounted hinges, no indication it ever had a lining or even an interior lip to keep the lid aligned, even seems odd to have the antler-tip handles on the front and back rather than the sides. The appraisal is not what I'd expect from a licensed appraiser, including that any repairs should have been mentioned, but doubt that she's much off on the dating...
