    Hi folks

found this glowing bead necklace today in a charity shop

seems to flouresce a bit in daylight and properly under UV

cant decide if they are glass or plastic though, seem more like plastic than glass, but quite heavy

clasp seems to have some age i think

    any thoughts appreciated

Cold to the touch or warm? They're rather nice.

Yeah not cold to touch, pretty sure plastic

So they can't be uranium glass, which I thought they were when I saw them

Do the tooth tap test. Tap them on your front teeth then tap glass and plastic to compare. Once you get it you will always get it!

Yeah I'm pretty sure they are anti, just interesting to know what period they come from and why they react like they do, being plastic

Love the color. Looks like a lovely bunch of grapes and so fun to wear.

Nice beads, and I also think plastic.
The glow is caused by something containing phosphor, which I guess is not radio-active, so not uranium. There are other chemical substances that contain phosphor and cause the same glow.:)

Another trick along with Marie's suggestion of tapping on a tooth (or a glass window pane) to hear the "clink" or more of a "thud", is just the weight in your hand. A full strand of glass beads this size would really have some weight.

I have to say at first glance I wasn't thinking these were too exciting, but I just noticed they are all hand knotted. That's a bit unusual for plastic beads. I think you have a nice older set.

I've got knotted older plastic beads. Charlie, are these separately knotted or sort of stuck on the cord?

the cord looks twisted between each bead.....

Anything molded onto the string is plastic for sure. I'd cheerfully wear those.

Hi Obb, komo's right they aren't individually knotted, just twisted like you see on very cheap beads
And yes stuck on the string

I'm surprised they haven't started snagging the Nieger beads yet. Or maybe not; old custard glass still cost$.
