Of course, may be wrong but... I do think it's Mauren. A surname found in Germany.

That's what I thought yesterday, but the space made me see it differently today.

  6. Debora: looks like you hit the jackpot, prepare for a hand pay!!!!! Thats nice work.
    J. Mamen, J. Mauren, J. ??????. When I looked at my search history after reading this I did indeed perform a quoted "J. Mauren" search but couldn't find squat. I'll be investigating the link into more detail ........

...... however, I'm getting that feeling again: no good deed goes unpunished

First time I have ever tried it. Last night I enlarged the signature in op's image, took a screenshot, put the screenshot through Lens image search and used the translate text option. It told me the signature said J. Mamen.
Turns out there actually was a porcelain/china painter who signed as J. Mamen, but as you can see this signature is completely different. EDIT: except for the J, the J is almost identical.

I know this doesn't help at all but just showing it in case it leads somewhere.

Nice work. Good on you for trying something new and getting a success!!!

  9. Thanks Laura, everything helps ..... and is deeply appreciated. I'm not sure where any of this is going or if I'll find any further info on the artist. But at least we know how to spell the name correctly.

Just the one item Debora found on the internet is what I'm seeing, besides possibly another 98 pieces my mom has in her display. I'll see her early next week - we shall see

could every piece in that display all be by the same artist?

If it is all by the same artist you'll have 98 examples of the signature and maybe, between all the signatures enough letters will be legible to once and for all definitely spell this name!

  11. Hope digging through all those pieces is as fun as finding 98 bottles of beer on the wall !
