My grandfather gave me this box or jewelry box (I don't really know what it is). I have never known if it is Chinese or Japanese, or what the sign on the lid means.

I would greatly appreciate any help on this.

    Thank you!!

It is Chinese. The sign is the Shou character, it stands for longevity. It is sideways, the bottom of the character is on the right.
The bats on either side (or top and bottom) stand for good luck and happiness.

Thank you very much, very kind!!

Let's see if I can get some antique dealer to date it.

Most antiques dealers will say this is late 19th.

The reason why I didn't mention a date is because you didn't ask, but here is my opinion: The printed paper lining is indicative of fake antique boxes and furniture that have been coming out of China since the 1980s.

You didn't show the front, so I can't see the shape of the lid properly, but I suspect it is a 'pillow box'. Original pillow boxes were used to store valuables, they could serve as pillows/neck rests during travel, and your valuables would be safe.

Back to Chinese fakes, those are also sold by antiques dealers. So unless you find someone knowledgeable and honest, you won't hear the truth.
My advise, never ask a dealer, ask on an antiques forum like ours, or ask a museum expert.

After studying your comments, I completely agree with you. I will keep it as a nice memory of my grandfather. I have read a good part of your comments and you are a crack. Thank you very much for your help.

    You're welcome, Tristan.
That is another reason why I didn't comment on the age at first. But it is a nice box and given in love. The symbolism probably matches what he wished for you. That in itself makes it a perfect memento.
