Through an Arlesienne costume I have, the town dress of Arles, Provençe. They wear a small headdress wound with a florentine silk velvet ribbon. The kind with griffins and flowers.
I used to collect regional costumes, not period ones, although I do have some 19th century costume bits and bobs that I used to wear.
    So you're movie material.;)

Any Jewelry- Now I see why you chose Florentine Silk.
    Christie's Auction-
'AN ITALIAN RENAISSANCE SILK VELVET, VOIDED, PILE ON PILE, BROCADED AND BOUCLÉ COMPOSITE PANEL, POSSIBLY FLORENCE, MID-16TH CENTURY
    Estimate:30,000 - 50,000 GBP'
Expensive natch-but also beautiful.I wonder if this type of material is occasionally uncovered under old wall paneling ? Would certainly help pay for your remodel (but best to keep it in place w/ expert conservation). Lots of old velvet, silk and leather wall coverings in Europe.

Mine is a humble late 19th century one.

Arlesiennes with silk and silk velvet ribbons around their minute headdress:

The headdress evolved from a regular size one. The ribbon is quite long, it is wrapped around several times.

B Movie material directed by a bad Tarantino imitator. We stayed in Arles, the Roman presence is amazing and I know the Arlesiene head dresses you speak of.We stayed on the Rhone quay,i went out one morning to stare at the river and asked a local where Van Gogh painted the Arles version of 'Starry Night'-he pointed down at the plaque I was standing on and said-'Right here Monsieur !',this was five minutes from our room. The family who ran the hotel were great, invited us down to their personal kitchen a few times to have breakfast.

For some reason, the lady is heavy, the man is light. The man who lost his storage was an antique collector. There are still items that came out of his storage I have no idea what they are.An old table nobody seem to know,he had some really interesting items.
I love antiques too! I've bought and resold for over 30+ years. Some I keep, but over the years hubby said we need to downsize.I buy at auction storages, attics, basements,I've dumpster dived.I love it!! but at almost 73 got to slow down.

    :playful:
The people in that part of Provence are like that.
I used to go to Arles a lot, first with my parents, and later when I went to Les-Saintes-Maries-de-la-mer in the Camargue for the yearly Gypsy pilgrimage.
I am not a Gypsy, but did research on Gypsy dance and music and used to know quite a few people from different Gypsy communities. I'm sure it all started when I was a toddler and saw my very bourgeois but fun-loving grandmother dancing with Gypsies in Avignon.:playful:

    It's an addiction.:D
    Travel along with us!
It's been years since I last traveled, my health won't allow it, but it is great to have the memories. When I 'talk' about those places it's like I'm back there again, so I still travel. Armchair traveler.;)

AnyJewelry- Made a point to take a leisurely walk thru the Gypsy (Roma ) Quarter in Arles.Met some nice people, and a ton of very affectionate cats ( we had been away from ours for 3 weeks). During Covid we have been avid YouTube travelers.

Here is where it gets complicated, so brace yourself.:D

I think you met Provençal Sinti, the traditional Gypsy community of Arles. As far as I remember, they live in three neighbourhoods.
Many people use the term Roma for all Gypsy groups, because the name Gypsy has been abused by some people. But overhere we tend not to use Roma for all Gypsy groups, because to us Roma are Gypsies from Eastern Europe and parts of Western Asia. We do use the word Romani.

The Continental Western European Gypsy communities are Sinti, Manouche, Caló and Zincali. You can find some Roma groups in Western Europe, but they are not traditional here.
The traditional Gypsy community of Arles is Sinto (Sinti), related to the Manouche of central and northern France. Later the Caló came to Provence from Spain and North Africa.

Our Dutch Gypsies are also Sinti btw, very friendly and hospitable people. We have some Roma, mostly refugees from Hungary and the former Yugoslavia.
The Sinti also live in Germany.
How a group of Sinti ended up in Provence, however, is one of history's mysteries. Many of them still have German surnames, like many of our Sinti.

We call English, Welsh and Scottish Gypsies Romanichal. Chal is Romanesh for child, so they are 'children of the Romani'.
There is no such thing as Irish Gypsies btw, their origin is not Romani, and their ancestors did not come from India or Pakistan.

There are also different Roma groups, but I won't go into that.;)

Any-Thanks for the info.We saw a documentary years ago called 'Latcho Drom' which seemed to be mostly about gypsy music. From what I recall (20 yrs ago),the gypsy section I walked thru must have been somewhere between the river (a short hop frm where Van Gogh painted Starry Night) and the Amphitheater, maybe ? We went into a McDonald's that was full of pretty well done tiles depicting Van Gogh's work (my wife says this was in Orange or Avignon). In those days whenever we need a quick pee/coffee or both it was always McDee's- they didn't seem to give a crap (i still always bought a packet of fries or a coffee.

Wonderful film, made by Tony Gatliff who is part Romani himself. He made a few other Gypsy-themed films too.
I didn't even know there was one in Arles, or Avignon or Orange for that matter.;) I know Americans who won't even go to a town in Europe if there is no McDonald's.:hilarious: Now I know why, they need to pee.:joyful:
