Large repoussé metal framed mirror

When I first spotted this piece from across a room I thought it was a cool Mexican tin mirror, but up close it seemed the rococo style said something else. It's 50" by 28", fairly heavy, and backed with wood that doesn't look super old (or new) to me. The metal has the appearance of silver-plate or polished pewter. I've scoured the web, and will continue to, but so far haven't found anything that strongly resembles it. There are no identifying maker's marks, but the reverse side of the metal is etched with "72", which I believe corresponds to the witch of the frame (72 cm).

Any input/opinions on age, country of origin, metal type, etc would be appreciated.

Is it Ferrous...magnetic?

The '7' has the European slash...it might not be Mexican.

Its not magnetic at all. It totally lost it's Mexican vibe and became more Italian- or French-looking when I got a good look at it. I thought I'd find a match online if it was a more contemporary repro, but didn't. I also thought since frame has some wear and the mirror glass isn't really aged, it might have been broken and replaced. I'd be thrilled if it's antique, but would still really like it if it's not.

 

I think I've seen similar mirrors in Portugal.

Just to think, I was in Portugal in the late 80s, but some things just stick to those 'little grey cells', even if it is not something I would focus on.

 

I love it when a detail from a long past experience bubbles up to the surface and solves a mystery! It answered all the questions, too - age, country of origin, and metal type. Thanks again!
