Japanese vase trying to be something else?

    Hi all,

hoping to hear your views on this vase. Picked it up and surprised to see "made in Japan" what with the heavy dark glaze. Looking closer you can see the asian motifs/ handles etc. It has a mark which seems familiar but I can't recall.
    So my questions are ;
Is this a usual Japanese style or is it trying to be some kind of majolica ware?
    Post WW1/pre WW2 or 1950's perhaps?
What is the secondary blue glaze /paint? not another hobbyist surely? Or was it a result of a firing experiment?
The red coloured base seems distinctive?
The base clay appears light coloured inside , that which isn't stained black.
    Approx 20cm high by 13cm at widest. IMG_jvase1s.jpg IMG_jvase2s.jpg IMG_jvase3s.jpg IMG_jvase5s.jpg IMG_jvase7s.jpg
What plant is represented by the centre motif?

appreciate your thoughts as always ,as I am drawing a blank on google with my limited vocabulary of keywords to describe this one...

About where the pics appear: That's where your cursor was when you selected full-size...I think.

    I believe it's pre-war, maybe quite a bit.

The blue appears to be paint over the glaze...chipping & peeling.

Soak that thing in lye, or another fairly strong alkaline solution, overnight. The paint will will either dissolve, fall off, or be easily removed with mild brushing after a hot water rinse.

I find that if I allow for a few blank lines between my text and the photos the photos do not appear in the middle of the post. When I finish my text I hit enter two or three times and the photos appears where I want them to.

I don't recognize the mark but I'd put the age between WWI and WWII. I think the blue you are seeing is cold paint. There's a good chance it was original to the vase. It's not uncommon on Japanese vases. It was cheaper to use cold paint than to use the color underglaze I believe. It's not a majolica glaze. The base clay appears to qualify it as redware.

sorry if I was unclearbut the base clay inside seems cream/white in colour but the base itself seems coloured/stained red...

Redware is a term. Not a color per say.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Sorry, but a bit off topic in a way.....I had to chuckle at your very first/top image..... it looks like a vase with, with it's 'hands' on it's hips', and the upper part, as a face with a whole lot of 'attitude'!!!!!!!!!!! Just couldn't help myself!:hilarious::hilarious::joyful::):D:D

yep, thats the word I was looking for, lots of English examples there now, but I guess it may have been copied by the Japanese like most English styles. Any clues on the impressed mark or the 'snake' handles for origins?
    many thanks
