    hi all

was a bit of a wash out at sundays booty, took a bundle of cash, but ended up spending under a tenner with these bits and a few painting types

2 ivory clothes brushes, one looks older than the other, older one has a lovely grain, wonder if they could be repurposed into something else

I'm a rescuer of ivory too. The fan does look like bone, and it wouldn't surprise me a bit if the bangle was bakelite (catalin for the purists). It the right shape, size and color. The necklace is probably Peruvian and not horribly old.

To test the bracelet, get a Q-tip or other cotton swab and dampen it. Dip in baking soda and rub the inside of the bracelet, hard. Hold it next to your nose while you're doing it. I bet you'll smell formaldehyde and the q-tip will turn brown or yellow. It doesn't always work for red or brown and black, but will for orange.

    Brilliant info, thanks evey

Wasn't sure on the bangle, but the sun made it feel a bit tacky, and could smell it straight away

Will test it to be sure though

Bakelite will do that if it gets warm enough. You did the hot water test without the water.

Was thinking they could be chopped into sections and made into bracelets by someone skilled enough

Could the long beads in the necklace be porcupine quills or am I being fanciful?.
I don’t even know where porcupines live other than not in the UK!

The necklace reminds me of necklaces that were sold in "Bohemian" stores in the 1970s and 80s -- I can almost smell the incense... I swear I had the exact piece. Possibly the long tube beads are some kind of bamboo.

Interesting thought, did wonder what they were

Searching them brought up lots of pics of unfortunate dogs

Poor porcupine. He was ambling along minding his own business, when all of a sudden this big snout just has to get in his face. So the porcupine did what porcupines do.

Could be. Maybe the ends are burned for decoration?.

Those necklaces are indeed Peruvian. Still made.

Agree on Peruvian for the necklace. Some sellers say they are bamboo, which makes sense because they feel like reed. Not porcupine, you'd need thousands or more porcupines for those countless Peruvian necklaces.:nailbiting:;)
Yes, a pierced bone brisé fan, pretty and still in one piece.:woot::woot: Ca 1900. These were made in great numbers in Canton, China.
Perfect for the hot weather we've been having here, although I would advise a more recent small Chinese sandalwood fan. Keep this bone cutie in one piece.:)
Bakelite and catalin are two very different early plastics. If it is bakelite it smells like formaldehyde when warm. If it is catalin it smells like hot milk.
In jewellery bakelite was used more in the US, catalin and celluloid more in Europe.
