Lizard handled pottery jug

I bought this awhile ago because I was curious about it and didn’t have time to figure it out before someone else would have grabbed it. I don’t think it’s necessarily ancient but I’m pretty sure it’s not super new either. I don’t know if it’s trying to be pre-Columbian or what? Unfortunately for value but maybe fortunately for ID the lizards nose fell off the second I finished taking photos. There was a little crack in it and I inadvertently brushed it as gently as a soft breeze and that was enough to take it off. So ID based on material may be easier now? It’s a good size at about 11” high. It looks like the seller probably gets their stuff at thrift stores based on what I’ve seen so there’s no backstory. If it was super old I think there would be more structural damage. Maybe earlier 20th or 19th? Looking forward to hearing some opinions.

 

Relatively modern Mexican import. Saw these a lot in the Southwest US in the 80s-90s.

 

Interesting, thanks. They did a pretty darn good job at faking the distress/patina. I was pretty convinced it had more age than that. Makes sense on where it was presumably purchased though.
