Cushman

Hi All -- just joined to get some information on 2 Cushman Colonial Creation items I have.

- 3 Shelf Table Lamp (5-102) no tag. I believe it has been rewired, but in great condition
- Searsburg Round Post Chair (5-82) Has oval tag

Would love to know approximate year of manufacture and what the value might be.

Both of these pieces were introduced in 1935, indicated by the numeral 5 in the model number stamping. The oval brass tags were used 1945-64. Note; some Cushman pieces were made for only a year or two, while others were made for 5-10 years... even longer in some cases if a good seller.... this would be the case with chair No. 5-82 having the postwar tag. Both are nice earlier Cushman.

In the everyday real world those prices are realistic. Cushman people are strange creatures and often pay a couple hundred for such pieces. They are designed by Herman DeVries - a fixture in neo-Colonial, often quirky design of his 1930's work for Cushman. There's also the well made, family run Vermont furniture aspect to these. A few years back, Cushman appeared in a Architectural Digest Magazine article. I could go on, but you get the idea.

 

Is the chair still available?

u should start you own thread.....this fine chair could get lost in the shuffle....

 

# 4-123 was called 'Taper Chair' and was only made in 1934, making it scare. Cushman only made a couple different three legged chairs in the mid 30's. I just happen to have this model - found it 25 years ago. Yours is the only other example I've seen . . and I have been collecting for decades. Nice chair you have there, enjoy !
