I bought this vase on Ebay because it looked fantastic, and in reality, it is absolutely lovely. I managed to get a bunch of autumnal coloured flowers and it showed it all its glory [unfortunately, I left it too late to photograph as they didn’t last long].

The design is based on a village built in a mountainous area that is in the background, with flowers and an exotic bird in the foreground. The surfaces [inside and outside] appear to have a network of fine crazing. The crazing can be seen on the neck of the first photograph. The features are edged with raised gold.

It measures 22cm height; 14cm bowl diameter; and 10cm top diameter, and weighs 812g.

    Material: Earthenware.

The ‘Made in Japan’ would imply it was manufactured sometime after 1921 and before 1941; or 1949 to 1951 and perhaps a few years later, before printed Marks were superseded by labels.

On the base there is a red Mark under the glaze that I imagine is the manufacturer, and a black painted script on the rim, which I hope is that of the artist, see photo 6.

The workmanship appears to be of a good quality.

Any information and thoughts will be gratefully received.

It's a hybrid Satsuma piece, almost certainly 1930's in this case. I had (or maybe still have) a figure with near identical decoration. Black marks on the rim are batch numbers, etc and sometimes 'left' or 'right' if it were part of a pair.

Makers mark is very scrawled but I'm pretty sure it is for Yaichi Kusube, date and decoration style fit.

Thank you Ce BCA, I had it in mind when I posted it that you would come up with the answer. Thanks very much.
