That's Egyptian. Was your dad in the army?

No... I thought was it roman or Egyptian... but then I thought the pattern on the blade looked German.. do you know how old it could be? I've highlighted the top of the blade 20220219_163530~3.jpg

The blade pattern is the Egyptian ba-bird. Figure might be a priest. I'd think older tourist ware.

I've tried to clean and it could be some letters possibly n p and a t but it isn't very cleR I'm afraid I think it's eye trick and nothing of relevance

It all looks to be a single cast item from the image. A photo of the top/tip area of the hilt would be a nice addition. A decorative dagger of some type. Given a single cast with no markings could be "modern", antique or really old like ancient. Was the metal rusted or black? Makes me curious as to what the metal is. Cleaning antique is typically a big no no. Would like to see an enlarged picture of the knife for the initials side. The engravings on the blade may have been added later.

I am not sold on Egypt; I suppose it could include Persia or Assyria. The figure on the hilt does not strike me as Egyptian. Note, there are three recognized hot beds of anything Egyptian kind of things, the 1820's, the 1880's and the 1920's. So, someone may have acquired the piece during one of these periods and had it personalized for the popular style.

All in my humble opinion as a definite non-knife expert. This is one best to get several professional opinions on.

It is not a knife but a letter opener. One piece, made of some pewteresque alloy. The bits that look to you like wear are in fact signs of a cast used past its prime. Maybe a souvenir but maybe orientalist decorative piece.
