It states that it was issued by the Department van Oorlog and is dated 1861 and there’s also another signature date (in fact there’s several different dates on this) There also a regiment stamp and some other interesting handwritten information and detail. I found a few other examples of this document on line. It looks all authentic to me. Document size is 25x38cm. What do you think? It is authentic? Thanks for any comments and keep well.

This is framed with glass. Sorry my photos are not that great.. Anyway these documents don’t seem to be very valuable so I figure there’s no real reason to fake one?

Maybe it is a well known person. Did you check the name?

Good point. Thanks I will check. I just attempted to read the whole document but didn’t focus on the name itself.

i have a similar USA document for my great-grandfather, hiding somewhere. I think someone framed it because it belonged to a relative rather than because it was valuable.

Thanks for comment. You may very well be right about why it was framed (good point you make) I also
don’t think it’s really valuable just interesting.

If you can track down a descendant, you might make someone really happy.

In a way it’s sad that these little family or ‘personal’ treasures end up in charity shops for no money all.. Reminds me that in the end we all need to let our little treasures and collections go (one way or another) We have all seen ‘life time collections’ being auctioned and sold off (usually by family members)almost immediately after a person dies..But I suppose by then it really doesn’t matter anymore..

Personally I hate reselling things I really like. But the mentality of re-selling and ‘letting go’ is something I really need to work on (ha ha it’s all just a flash in the pan)

Nice idea. But in reality it probably ended-up in a charity shop because there’s no one left that cares anymore.

I know people who spend huge amounts of time tracking their relatives. Searching for documents and going to.cemeteries. I have myself received a letter from Japan which included a family tree spanning generations. Are you in the US? If so you might offer it to the Mormons.

It’s crazy to me the stuff descendants don’t want. From the valuable, to the cool, to personal. Thinking about it many don’t care but for many maybe it’s just an issue of space. People don’t inherit big old family homes anymore where you can store generations worth of stuff. If they do I guess they often sell those. So if you’re living in an apartment or small house I guess you just can’t keep the stuff even if you do want it. I guess it’s good for us collectors and re-sellers.

A very valid point you make regarding the space issue/constraints. I suppose every situation is probably different.

You found this in Africa? “From the 17th century onwards, the Dutch started to colonize many parts of Africa, including Ivory Coast, Ghana, South Africa, Angola, Namibia and Senegal.”

Very nice. So one died when he was 19, and the other at an unknown date but was married when he was 23?

I haven't studied the scans, a bit too much for the old brain.;) As far as I have glanced through the links, the marriage link refers to him being the father of the groom.
