Jewelry Box? Or something else...

Bought this for $10 just loved the scene on the cover and want to clean it up a little. Assuming it is brass...what is the best way to clean it and what was it used for if something other than just trinkets and/or jewelry? It has a strange smell when I open it up....one I can’t really describe...I’m assuming it’s by the Jennings Brothers? I think? Or maybe I am thinking of something else because am looking at the JB on the bottom....any info about it and how to clean it is appreciated....and how much would this typically sell for. I’m assuming it’s a fairly cheap piece and at $10 I couldn’t go wrong....

 

Nice looking box, Ashley. Size? What does the inside look like? Is the inside lined with fabric? something else? nothing?

The picture of the underside and marking is way too small for us to see.

It’s approximately 7.5 x 5.25 x 2.5 inches. Not a cigar smell. Odd smell I don’t recognize.

Actually it may be a stale cigar smell idk.

 

Hmmm ok thanks...I just am leaving it as is for now until I figure it out or can take it by an antique shop . Rather wait than ruin it somehow...

 

It looks too big to be a playing card box, so I'd bet on a later cigarette box. It may never have held any, so no smell.

 

It smells. I think of stale cigars. The second you open it it hits you....
